Sometimes all you can do is shake your head …
Thursday, August 6th, 2009
I was in a meeting with a couple of City Council Representatives. The wording of a motion was brought up in the discussion.
Council Representative #1 says, “That’s not what we voted on.”
Council Representative #2 pulls out the minutes and reads the motion word for word.
Council Representative #1 replies, “Huh, I didn’t know that.”
I just shook my head.
I’m still shaking it.

Oh yeah, best part of that story: it was a roll call vote – i.e. involved spending some money… Her name was called, and she replied with an “aye” without even thinking about what she was saying aye to. Good times.

Brett Rogers Says:
Should we see it as a failure of the public school system that our elected representatives have issues reading and performing basic math?
Personally, I think there ought to be a rule in place that requires politicians, before running for office, to pass a simple elementary school aptitude test. It would likely weed out at least a third of them.

I’ve seen it, too. Alderperson votes on a motion, then two minutes later asks “what did we just vote on?”, and attempts to change her vote because she forgot what she was voting on.
Thank god she is gone.
