Danger...Airport Noise?
It never ceases to amaze me the number of people who move next to an airport, then complain about the noise.
As a very young adult I lived for a while at the intersection of the Tri-State Toll way and the O'Hare Airport runway. So, I don't want anyone telling me I don't know what airport noise is like. OK? But, I knew the airport was there when I moved in. It was hard to miss.
So, where is this going you ask? We are going to Rock Hill, South Carolina and the York County Airport.
The noise form emerged as the top source of anger among many homeowners. It reads, in part, that people on a given property “may be exposed to significant noise levels as a result of the airport operations.”
Neighbors feared potential buyers would be scared off.
County Manager Jim Baker responded...
"It wasn't designed to warn people away from buying homes near the airport. But, it became clear there was a great deal of fear."
Really? Imagine that.
Mr. Baker also denied that the threat of lawsuits by neighborhood associations factored into the decision to drop the disclosure form.
...Lessons can be learned about how to handle disputes differently in the future, including the need to reach out to residents early in a decision.
Rock Hill City Manager stated in the future...
he would work harder to anticipate possible complaints rather than waiting for controvery to erupt.
If this is true, it will be a lesson well learned.
